Occasional reviews A persistent challenge: the diagnosis of respiratory disease in the non-AIDS immunocompromised host

چکیده
The diagnostic and therapeutic approach to respiratory disease in the immunocompromised host remains a challenge for several reasons: (1) the current increase in both the number of immunocompromised hosts and their length of survival; (2) the high frequency of lung disease in these patients, and (3) the severity of these lung diseases. A good example is given in a recent review by Paterson et al of the epidemiology of invasive aspergillosis in transplant recipients. The incidence of this opportunistic infection, which mainly aVects the lung, varies from 1% in kidney recipients to 9% in lung recipients (with 2% in liver recipients and 7% in bone marrow recipients). In this population it has a mortality rate of 55–92% and accounts for 10–15% of deaths of all transplant recipients.

متن کاملHuman Cytomegalovirus: Infections and Diagnosis
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a ubiquitous virus whose sole host is humans. Since HCMV can contagion from person to person through numerous ways, vast populations of humans are infected. HCMV infections can potentially have a range from asymptomatic infection in immuno-competent hosts to life-threatening diseases in organ recipients and patients with AIDS. The present article reviews the occu...
متن کاملBK Polyomavirus in Respiratory Specimens of Patients with Respiratory Disease
Background and Aims: The role of BK and JC polyomaviruses (BKV and JCV) in the causation of respiratory disease and the natural route of transmission has not well been established. The aim of study was to determine the prevalence of BK and JC viruses in 280 respiratory samples and evaluate their contribution to respiratory disease. Materials and Methods: PCR was used to screen specimens for BK...
متن کاملPneumoviruses: Molecular Genetics and Reverse Genetics
Pneumoviruses are responsible for significant respiratory disease in their hosts and represent a major problemfor human and animal health. Pneumoviruses are members of the family Paramyxoviridae, subfamilyPneumovirinae and the virus particles consist of a negative-sense, nonsegmented RNA genome within a helical nucleocapsid structure enveloped in a lipid membrane derived from the ho...
متن کاملDisseminated Nocardiosis in an Immunocompromised Child with Unknown Cause
Disseminated nocardiosis (DN), is an infrequent and severe infection due to Nocardia species and defined as infection in two or more discontinuous organs. Most infections occur in the immunocompromised host or in persons with underlying disease. DN occurs rarely in children. In this report, we describe an 11-year-old immune-compromised child with nocardiosis involving the lung, skin, brain a...
